The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), on December 15, 2025, announced a series of mitigation measures to address reduced visibility on National Highways during the winter fog season. These measures aim to enhance road safety and ensure safer movement of commuters under foggy conditions, and are broadly classified under Engineering Measures and Safety Awareness Measures.
Under the Engineering Measures, NHAI has directed reinstallation and repair of missing or damaged road signs and studs, rectification of faded pavement markings, and installation of reflective markers and retro-reflective yellow stickers on safety devices such as crash barriers. Additional safety steps on construction stretches include proper barricading, diversion signage, and use of solar blinkers at median openings to maximize visibility on National Highway stretches during low-visibility conditions.
The Safety Awareness Measures focus on alerting highway users through Variable Message Signs (VMS), electronic signages displaying fog alerts and speed limits, public address systems, and public service announcements via electronic billboards, radio, and social media. NHAI has also mandated weekly night-time inspections, deployment of highway patrol vehicles with blinking batons near dense fog zones, use of reflective jackets by officials, coordination with emergency services, and joint drills with traffic police. Commuters have been advised to follow safe driving practices such as reduced speed, lane discipline, and use of reflective tapes, reinforcing NHAI’s commitment to safe and seamless travel during the winter season.
